Wyoming and Idaho

We are back from a quick vacation. I managed to score three (actually several more) bucket list items in 4 days. 1.) Long Snowmobile Trip. 2.) Yellowstone Park and 3.) Wyoming. I reached my 50th State --Wyoming! And we took a 90 mile snowmobile trip in Yellowstone National Park. We went to the "Craters of the Moon--National Monument and Preserve" in Idaho and also stopped at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) where I got to see (with my own eyes) the very cool nuclear powered twin turbojet engine. It was a successful experiment in the 1950s and 1960s. https://whatisnuclear.com/safety-minutes/htre-3-meltdown.html Of course, I had my Radiacode scintillation detector with me and yes, the apparatus is "Hot". The screenshot of the readings from my three walk-arounds the artifact. I swear you could smell the radiation. There was a very un-natural burnt smell something reminiscent of burned bakelite. Although, I am quite certain the emitted radition was not the source...

The reality has finally hit. I will be away for the holidays. We will all get through it that's for sure, but reality has a way of resisting all other thought. Not only will I be away from home and NY, the United States, I will even be away from "Antarctica". I will be at the very small camp at Taylor dome almost for sure. In actuality is is probably better to be out in the field camp (tell ya the truth) than here. The culture and customs are very strong in Mactown. It is like having your holiday at a stranger's house (not by their invitation).

I told my boss about what I had heard the temperatures were at Taylor dome and he assured me those were windchill temperature. That doesn't count. I go by real temperatures. It probably won't be colder than -25F. I feel a lot more confident.

Work is going well. I get the chance to fix all sorts of electronic stuff. I was working on solar panels, transmit combiners and PRC-1099s today.

My ankle really went around the bend today (pun intended). It is almost totally better. I almost signed up for a Thanksgiving 5K run but decided I had better wait. The ground is very rocky and irregular around here. It is a dangerous place to run even if you are not having issues with ankles.

I turned in my midterm exam, 14 pages of financial analysis. I am optimistic. I spent quite a bit of time on it, that is for sure. Some things still don't make total sense. It is those pesky things that help you to learn though. This Tuesday we have a Berkshire town meeting in regards to our new "Road Preservation Law." Wednesday we are having the Tioga County planning board meeting in Berkshire. We have a couple pieces of business I need to review beforehand. I took a couple of hours off yesterday. Douglas's friend Jamie came down with a vintage snowmobile (Bought as scrap metal). They spent all day Saturday and Friday night cruising around the property. I took it around for awhile and did some jumps and stuff. It was kinda nice getting around so easily in the deep snow that would be very difficult to get to otherwise. I have been traveling a bit. I ended up getting stranded in Detroit. Delta Airlines put me up for the night. I am home now. No worse for the wear. I don't get upset at the airlines (no matter who I fly). People are often at their worst when they travel. They have "home" issues. It is a complex situation. Just be safe. Have a great plan B. Can you imagine if the pilot got on the intercom and said "trust us"? When someone says "trust us" it is distastefully condescending and you should not be trusting. I took a pic from the airplane of the farm and roughly outlined the property lines. Also, a nice pic of the llamas. They are getting ready to watch "llama tv". They will all move in close quarters, sit side by side and spend all night getting their view of the world.

There must be a term surrounding the concept of analying but not understanding. I mean the alpha llama Professor can stare at me and a match, watch me strike it and light the heater so close, right next to my face with all his might and sadly will never figure out how to make his herd-friends warm when he wants. This is a fact of which I am certain. The same condition applies to watching something like the Nightly Business Report. You can talk about all sorts of stuff and show all sorts of graphs, how do you communicate what took you a lifetime to figure out to another individual? The llamas got their rabies shots the other day. In NY we have to have a licenced vet administer a rabies shot. Jim the vet said, you have to watch out, your llamas may give llamas a good name. It took about 15 minutes for Dr. Jim to get them all. He agreed, our llamas are well trained.

I will be leaving from Binghamton (my point of departure) on my way to Denver for tonight and tommorow night. Bonnie and I went out for breakfast this morning. I couldn't help but take a couple shots of the farm before we head out. I also went outside last night and looked at the full moon. Starting next week I will not see the night sky for over 4 months, weird. I find it difficult to sleep in sunshine. The good thing is that this will cure me of that and next year I will be able to nap outside in my hammock. There are no trees and almost no life at all on Antarctica. It is 98% covered by ice. There are bacturium and only the simplest of vegetation in very spotty locations. Everything has pretty much gone as clockwork (a fast running clock) over that last couple of months, the leave from my regular job, the doctor and dentist appts, all the way to getting my sunglasses which arrived late, but in time yesterday.
