Gracie decided to give us a presentation regarding current world shipping issues. She thinks she is so smart. But she is wrong about port congestion. If we allow anyone to drive commercial trucks there will be no backup of containers moving inland. Gracie, a tip for public speaking, Never turn your back to the audience. We had "Demo Days" at work again this past week. I was busy on most of the days, but I went up to the demo site after the event was over on Friday and took a look at machines we have on site.

I made it to Denver on my journey to Ross Island Antarctica. I am in training today and part of tomorrow. I got up early and worked out. The Denver elevation (over 5000 feet) is pretty easy to notice when you are working out. I had to take deeper breaths as compared to Greene NY where I usually work out. I met a few people on the way to the ice as well last night, a shuttle driver, greenhouse attendant, a trainer, and some fireman. I will fit in fine with these folks. Everybody is looking for the same adventure as I am. The movie is 10 meg.

I am in LA. I missed my connection. I did manage to get the red-eye out tonight. So it looks like I get to spend another night on a plane. I slept last night. I probably got 4 or 5 hours of sleep. I caught up with a fellow ice person last night for the flight. We were recounting the experience. Our experiences and impressions were very similar. He was saying that he can't describe a lot of it. He went on to say that even looking at his photos, they didn't tell what he was experiencing. We agreed about how strange it was meeting the winter-overs we were taking over for when we got there in October. "They had that weird stare and they talked ok and everything but there was no emotional content to what they were saying". There is a zombie like quality to some people who spend a lot of time on the ice. After a couple of weeks at pole he was medivaced to McMurdo for altitude sickness (there were quite a few this year). Berkshire Its a crappy day. The temperature got up in the forties which was nice, however. This morning when I left the house (still dark) I took the Subaru. The car started fish tailing when I was heading down the street. For a 4wd car.. That was pretty bad. The ice on the roads was so thick. When I got to the first of the big hills, I got out of the car and slipped. I decided I would not attempt the downhill at any speed. I turned around and made the long detour down to Maine NY and then got on the state rd 26 to go north. That is about a 15 mile detour. To top that all off deer seemed to jump out everywhere. Luckily, the car was not damaged and I got where I was going. The llamas appreciated the higher temperatures a lot. Fawna is about the same. We are hoping she will get better when the weather gets better. She sure can kick. She got the inside of my thigh today. Those feet can sure do some damage. It is bruised and cut. I woke up the other night somewhere over Bolivia. This week is a very busy travel week. I am in Buenos Aires for a few days before flying up to Porto Allegre Brazil and then on to Mogi Das Cruzes Brazil. This my first visit to Argentina. It is summer in the Southern hemisphere and the temps are near 90F. The city is great for shopping and walking. I have been doing some significant urban hiking. I visited the San Telmo area yesterday, and the old port and shoppping districts today. There is definately some political tension in the city. I am sure it is calmer than in the past, but there is still some tension. I like this place. It is hard to believe I was hiking in Northern Georgia just last weekend. Busy. Next weekend I will be in Nueva York. Maybe we can hike some of the Fingerlakes Trail.

I lived thru a Sunday. I spent a lot of time in the library. We watched the debut of "Emperors of the Ice" last night as part the science lecture. The producers/lecturers gave a talk as well. The documentary will be seen this coming year in the US. It is a National Geographic Special. It is pretty interesting to see a film like this one. It is all staged around McMurdo. To my eyes it isn't that exotic anymore. Don't get me wrong. I find it exciting and all that. However, it is like seeing a documentary about your family Thanksgiving day dinner. It is familiar. I have a very busy day today. I actually got quadruple booked today with work and training. That has to get worked out this morning. Here's me in the ham shack. I have a bit of work to do for the shack but we are going to be using 14.243 MHz USB. I will be using the station callsign KC4USV. Schedules are forthcoming.

I have been moving about a lot. This past weekend I was up in Rochester. I sold my Mom's car and a few other things. Spending time sorting through 30 years of accumulation is time consuming. I did run across the sugar jar I remember from my childhood. It brought back some memories of how I used to dump the sugar on my cold cereal. I am headed to NYC with DJ this coming weekend. We are staying in a friend's apt in Brooklyn. The main purpose of the trip is to pick up my new Coats Model 10/10 Automatic tire machine. It was a great deal. I use the windfall for fun and travel. I should have a vacation in Costa Rica booked this week. I took the following cat picture in the feed store. "Junior" really wanted to be in the middle of things. I had to push him out of the way to sign the credit card slip.
