Summer brings new friends

Summer is here. I have the AC on occasionally, except for the zoom room, which the AC is on all the time I am in there. Since we had so much rain awhile back, the mosquitos are unbearable. I called for air support from a pest killer company. June brings new fawns in this area. We have two new ones in the back yard, learning about the world. There was a nice Pitts Special that showed up at the EAA 690 breakfast this past week. I picked up another traffic control device. I will add an appropriate relay and sell to someone with a man-cave or bar. Wisdomino is certainly keeping me busy. I am a professional networker now. A lot to juggle.

It has been unseasonably mild out. Today it is 25 degrees and mostly clear and calm. The springs are really working out back. Even though it is 25 degrees out most of the water is not frozen and running very nicely since it is coming right out of the ground. I found a new spring that I did not know about today. You can see so much more in the woods this time of year. It is really nice to see through the woods and still see woods, not a neighbor, or dump or something. Woods to the left, right and center. I got a couple week's worth of wood today. The jeep is leaking gas. I will add that to its long list of ailments. I think if it had a spleen it may be close to being ruptured. It doesn't handle real well when you have the spings on the stubbers. It reminds me of the dog on the "Grinch that stole christmas."

I do NOT see wood sticking out the side windows of your Jeep. I am disapointed by your waste of carrying capacity.

Today we went up to a NASA building to peak the antennas for the Erebus Volcano cam. We squeaked about 4 additional dB out of the signal. The golfball is the radome for satellite tracking. You will see the web cam is not functional at this time. I am not sure if they are going to feed the video I worked on today to the web or not. There are alot of good movies and what not at this site though. http://www.ees.nmt.edu/Geop/mevo/mevo.html The other pic is of my boss and a rigger who did the hard part up the tower. All I had to do was setup the Spectrum Analyzer and give adjustment instructions over the handheld radio to the riggers at our site and atop the volcano. Next week looks exciting. I will be going to a large penguin rookery Monday and the the summit of Mt. Terror Tuesday (weather permitting). I have volunteered in the galley Sunday morning. That will be different and fun. I told myself I was going to pitch in as I always like to do.. so I am.

White Knuckle Driving

Bonnie and I had an interesting experience this evening. We heard a strange noise that stopped us mid-sentance. She described it as an explosion. I described the noise as a rolling casacde as if something fell from the roof. I took the big spotlight out to check the house, stove pipe, the barn, the llamas. After some more discussion we figured out what the strange and unusual sound was... it turned out to be a strange noise indeed. It was the town snowplow. Yes, it is that quiet on the farm that a normal sound like a snowplow can be really load and unexpected. Partly, because although it snows a lot, we dont have that many snowplows. I had the worst drive to work this past week. I was traveling 5 mph down one of our hills (in neutral) and still had the antilock brakes kicking in! Just keep the machine between the ditches! Night Flying and Domicile Changes

There has a been a lot going on. Over the Holidays I was in GA, NY, MI, MA, RI, FL. DJ has moved off the farm and has moved back to her farm. I did some night flight last night. There is a requirement to do 10 takeoffs and landings at night for the private pilot licence. Landing at night is different. It is like... well... dark. I took a bunch of photos, but the most interesting one is where the flash was on by accident. I like that you can see through the prop and that the windscreen didn't seem that dirty.

Solon NY Water Mill

I went and looked at the Solon Pond Mill. I was mistaken last time when I was up there in 2000. It was Summer and everything was overgrown. The mill is about an 1/8 mile from the building I thought might have been the mill. The mill is in rough shape. But everything is still there. I couldn't get underneath to see if the turbine was in good shape. I had heard that it was buried in muck. I suspect it is there, but probably in rough shape as well. It is a combination grist and saw mill, and could be restored to do exactly that. I am going to pass. I was thinking it would make a great homesite however. There is 3.9 acres (a lot for a mill) and you could build a nice house that looked period and work on getting an awesome water powered workshop out back. There is a planner, and it looks like a jig saw and I bet a few other pieces of woodworking equipment in there. All the shafting looks good.
