Carbon Monoxide!?

Weird. The smoke alarm went off, not incredibly odd when I am using the fireplace, but it wasn't the smoke detector. It was the CO alarm. I was totally surprised. It had never gone off as long as I have had one, over many many years. Yep, after resetting it a few times. It was getting a reading over 200 ppm CO. When I took it downstairs I got a reading near 300 ppm. I started getting light headed at this point. After thinking maybe the furnace heat exchanger failed and puzzling around a bit I figured out what happened. As part of the huge winter storm that recently covered almost half of the US, we lost our electricity. So, being well prepared, I rolled out the generator and started doing what I normally do. The generator (although it was completely outside) was creating CO to get in the house. Using the fireplace draft (and possibly other leaks) the whole house created a vacuum around the seal of the basement garage door. After the CO got into the house the forced air heat...

My friend Dennis took these great pics of a screech owl in his wood duck house in Williamson, NY. I heard one of these guys out in my woods a couple weeks back. These things are loud. The first time you hear one you really can't figure out what it is, a mammal, human, bird?

It is nice to live around here. Despite the 2 inches of snow this weekend it is very nice. I am accelerating my flight training. I expect to have my private pilot licence this year. I am studying for the written exam and I am also studying for the Certified Information Security Manager(CISM) test in June. Neither of these tests is cheap.

Radio Free Binghamton | 90.5MHz WHRW-FM An interesting day. I am listening to reggae from our local university station. Our host played a couple of classic requests for me: Jimmy Cliff; "Give the people what they want" and Bob Marley; "No Woman, No cry". I am interested by the modern fusion of reggae with "trance", "techno" and asian/latin influences. Very interesting indeed. I have decided that tea is a more powerful drug than beer when considering the subleties. The following picture is of some combings of Fawna I have on sale on ebay.

My kayak trip was awesome! So what happens when three restless boys want to do something exciting in Atlanta over the Thanksgiving holiday? Shoot the Hooch. Traverse the Chattahoochee river in grand style. We did it in a combination of couchsurfer, thrillseeker, and urban explorer (mostly Couchsurfer). We met for the first time last week. The participants, one from France (a recent MBA grad from Georgia Tech), one from California (a 20 something Mechanical Engineer) and me. We put in at the Buford Dam at Lake Lanier. We put in illegally since the park was closed. (I mean who would want to use a park on a holiday?) We parked illegally at both ends of the run (not sure of the reasons, but an accumulation of a $50 parking ticket). And, we camped illegally for two nights. So, let's add some danger with two beginner kayakers, and very fast water. It is very dangerous, at least one person has died in the Chattahoochee in the last year from swift water. The Running Network -- Main Page Sometimes my blogger pop-up works and sometimes it doesn't. I think some websites may supress the pop-up. I am unsure of how they do that. It must be with a javascript. It is about 13 degrees today. We got a far bit of snow this weekend. Neverthe less Bonnie managed to get the chicken coop clean and the llama house. So when it gets warmer ther will be less stink. I had quite a bit of homework. It looks like it takes about 6 hours of work a week for this class. There are no further short cuts, It just takes time and concentration. A lot of new concepts for me. It is exciting to learn new things. There was neat progam about cows last night on PBS.
