I am no longer part of the Vestry at Christ Church Norcross. I served my full term as the Buildings and Grounds liaison. It was three years. There were a lot of items to deal with over the years. But the effort wasn't the work. It was the responsibility and knowing that I wasn't doing enough. I think most people get that feeling with obligations. Maybe not. I am sure the time and responsibility will be quickly reallocated. When I signed on I figured I would learn something. Now I am thinking about what I learned along with the hows and whys. I think my Grandfather would have approved. The roads continue to be slick and unpredictable. It would be one thing if the roads were plain slippery, but they are clear and then occasionally have patches of ice or are otherwise changeable. It was 7 below zero F this morning.

This guy's company car got stuck just south of here on RT 15 in PA.

I spoke at the LavaCon this week. My presentation was very well received. There were well over 100 folks who chose to attend my presentation. Afterwards we had a supplier meeting in Cartersville and a hike up Pine Mountain. https://www.lavacon.org/ It was good to enjoy some brief moments with a llama as part of the conference. And it was good to meet up with lots of folks I have got to know over the years.

Honshu and Okinawa

I am back. I spent 10 days in Japan, 5 days for work on the main island of Honshu and 5 days of solo adventure in Okinawa. Travel is so invigorating dispite the uncomfortableness. Jetlag, anxiety, crowds, and other discomforts aside, it is mind-expanding and rewarding. Work went well. I flew a new airline (Skymark) from Tokyo to Naha. I am always wary of strange discount airlines and all the traps they set. However, I had a great expereince with "Sky". I was actually shocked. Super easy checkin at the airport, no extra fees even with extra luggage. The primary mission in Okinawa was to visit the Peace Park and the suicide cliffs of Okinawa. From what I understand, at the end of WW2 the inhabitants were encouraged to commit suicide rather than surrender to the Americans and get tortured and eaten. I had a chat with a info-type person on email and I produced the following paragraph that belongs here. This industry that we are talking about (that really doesn't even have a name yet).. is the future similar to the industrial revolution. The use of information is the future. There are cultural issues, technical issues, economic issues all culminating around a core set of ideas. I am excited (can you tell?). At lunch, Greg Mills and I went and looked at the bridge that was hit by a truck. Actually, a truck carrying an excavator (with the boom not lowered well enough) smashed into the bridge in Genesee Valley park over I-590. One of the I-beams (6 or 8 foot high) was bent by 2 feet. I am glad I wasn't close by when it happened. I can only imagine what the manager said to the driver of the truck. "Why don't you take tomorrow off" or something just as catchy perhaps.
