Bobcat the animal

I had a special and unexpected expereince at work this past week at about 7:30 AM. I glanced out my office window and saw what I thought was a medium size dog. With a closer look it turned out to be a bobcat. Yes, I work in the heavy equipment business, but this was a animal type bobcat not the earthmoving bobcat. I feel privileged to get such a close view of the animal as it walked around and generally checked things out. It was clearly not sick. No rabies, just curious. It also says something nice about the wilderness around my office.

6th Annual Best Practices Conference - Welcome I have not blogged in a while. I have a lot to report. Professor is doing well. The "abnormal structure" turned out to be a bacteria based abnomaly. The pigs are now in boxes. Bonnie and I had a real country breakfast this morning of Bacon (that we raised) and scrambled eggs (that we raised). My flail mower is being delivered tomorrow. I had it modified to attach to a front of a tractor or the rear. It will be soooo easy to have my headphones on in my heated cab mowing my trails with the mower out front. Too cool. The other llamas are well and we really enjoy watching their grace. I was at a conference for Content Development Management in Cape Cod this week. It was worthwhile. I gave a 15 minute presentation as part of a panel for 150 managers or so. It was fun.

I had my first flight lesson in Georgia today. I went up in a 2003 fuel-injected Cessna 172SP. I absolutely could not believe the performance. I unintentionally bleated out "Holy Shit" on climb out. Interestingly, the climb-out to near-pattern altitude lasted pretty much as long as it took to get those few words out. It was an excellent reaffirmation why I do this. After the short flight today I was a little shaky and I felt the need for more. There really is a "jones" with this stuff. I can see Homer Simpson saying, "Shoorrtt Finnaall" with a bit of a drool. Next week it is a new airport, new airplane, and a new instructor.

Well I am back. I lost little data. You will always looose something though. It takes time to get the machine the way it was. Hopefully it is better now. It was not shutting down well before. The registry was kinda messy. Now I have a 20 Gig and a 40 Gig drive in the machine. I expect that to be the last upgrade for this box. I don't need the fastest most powerful machine. The Satelite Internet link is my bottle neck. Last weekend Bonnie and I went to visit Bob and DJ McCullough in the next town over to see their baby pygmy goats. They are fun. I will post a pic as soon as I rediscover my passwords for the ftp connection to the server.

Easter is here. The weather is perfect for an Easter day. I have been working (for regular work) this weekend. There is so much to do. I had a birthday a few days back. It was relaxed. I have been better at relaxing. I did have time to build a Pedestrian Horn for the leaf. Supposedly, a few EVS such as Opel's Ampera have these pedestrian horns. The leaf did not, but mine does now. I used a small piezo buzzer, a push button, a small fuse and a couple hours of my life. There is a small accessory battery in the leaf so there was no rocket science trying to find a decent 12VDC power supply. The leaf is so quiet sometimes folks don't hear you behind them when they are walking. The regular horn is too loud when you sneak up behind a pedestrian. It is nice to have a quieter, friendly noise maker for this need. I felt good that I accomplished this small project without a single trip to the store for parts, tools or anything. I had it all in "my inventory stuff".

Today was kind of slow. I am getting to see again what happens to me and the organization in a new job situation. I am paying super close attention this time. Some things just happen every time. It is just so predictable. Yet there seems no changing it. I volunteered to be a peer counselor here at McMurdo. The function is an area of overlap with the miltary although we report to absolutely no one. I am available for private confidential discussions with others as their choice. This is part of a bunch of techniques used to help folks with post traumaic stress syndrome. Getting the horror of something into the rational part of the brain shortly after what we call an "incident" is very important for mental health. I am getting training in this area. It overlaps with our mass casualty training. Saturday night is the big Halloween party which makes the real begining of the Summer here.
