Colleagues from Japan

We had two colleagues from Japan join my team for two weeks. It was a great expereince to share cultures, workflows and real work expereince for comparison between the US and Japan. We did lot of activitys outside of work and had some fun. Angie joined for on the weekend activities. It will be a very memorable time for all involved.

Commute as a New Experience

I am always interested in new experiences. Well, most new experiences if they are not obviously dreadful. I have a new commute to my new job. Google maps says its an hour. In practice it is longer (in my straight-up following lord and master maps of Google) due to car wrecks, and general bullshit. I don't have to be in the office everyday, but a long commute is new to me. I am evaluating it. I am listening to audio books which is a great use of time that I otherwise probably wouldn't be doing. I dont have any pictures, I am too busy watching the road ahead for flashes of brake lights and nutso drivers.

Ultralight aircraft, used ultralights for sale. I went for a great ultralight airplane ride the other night. John's Dad, Mel took me up for about 20 minutes or so. It was great. I felt myself smiling pretty good. I took the controls and did some practice coordinated turns. It was a great experience. I hope to get an ultralight at some point. It is different and fun. I am in LA. I missed my connection. I did manage to get the red-eye out tonight. So it looks like I get to spend another night on a plane. I slept last night. I probably got 4 or 5 hours of sleep. I caught up with a fellow ice person last night for the flight. We were recounting the experience. Our experiences and impressions were very similar. He was saying that he can't describe a lot of it. He went on to say that even looking at his photos, they didn't tell what he was experiencing. We agreed about how strange it was meeting the winter-overs we were taking over for when we got there in October. "They had that weird stare and they talked ok and everything but there was no emotional content to what they were saying". There is a zombie like quality to some people who spend a lot of time on the ice. After a couple of weeks at pole he was medivaced to McMurdo for altitude sickness (there were quite a few this year). One of the springs broke on the garage door this week. I found replacement springs (wholesale) replaced them and was testing the door and the whole mess just exploded. It was a humbling experience. I could not fix it by myself. I had to call a professional. The new 1/2 bath laundry room is finally nearing completion. I think I have been working on it for about 8 months. I am ready to move on to another project already.
