Colleagues from Japan

We had two colleagues from Japan join my team for two weeks. It was a great expereince to share cultures, workflows and real work expereince for comparison between the US and Japan. We did lot of activitys outside of work and had some fun. Angie joined for on the weekend activities. It will be a very memorable time for all involved.

We have been busy getting furniture. I have decided after a prolonged evaluation period, I don't like IKEA. I certainly don't need a reason, maybe it is the cheap furniture, crowds, waiting, poor (no) service. Maybe it is the non standard vocabulary. I don't like buying furniture at all anyway. But, I can say I did find a few furniture stores close to home that were a true shopping pleasure such as "Bova" and "By Design".

Angie and I went to a fundraising dinner for Refugee Support in Atlanta Friday Night. We both had fun and we felt our dollars are making a difference. We also got a copy of "Pete the Cat", Autographed.

Smithville NY I ran my first ever 5K race this morning over in Smithville NY. Smithville is the town that has a great old unrestored mill. The mill captured my attention when I stated looking for property just after I decided to take the job down this way. I hope someday it gets restored. It feels good to do something that is good for yourself for the first time. You have to get over the natural resistance of something new (the biggest hurdle), plan, execute, and reflect. I have now moved into reflect. It was a marathon for me. I am planning on running in the Berkshire Heritage 5k later this summer too. Maybe another one, if there is another one close by. I fueled up last night on some of Bonnie's most excellent Oatmeal Chocolate Chip cookies. My exercise bike generator project is working now pretty good. Today is the day I head out to Taylor Dome on a twin otter skiplane. I have been having fun at work fixing radios and troubleshooting system issues all week. There are a lot of radios down here thats for sure. And there is a great variety. I have been reflecting on the three things that I believe make this place hospitible: Communications, Mobility, and Shelter. I find these three items to be a key classification system to understand and optimize sucesss in operating in such a harsh environment. I expect to sleep outside tonight. It will be between -25 and -40. It will be the coldest I have camped out I think. -25 below has been my coldest experience in happy camper school a few weeks ago. Before that it was with Jeff in Alfred NY. We did not have a thermometer but it was definately well below zero that night. That was few years ago but you have a tendency to remember them. I haven't been blogging much. I do have a lot to say, however. I will get to it. I have a bunch of nice pictures to post soon. The following movie was filmed when I was on the ice; the premiere is this month. It is a movie about my co-workers and I think I am in the film. They got a great shot of my beard all frosty.
