Gracie decided to give us a presentation regarding current world shipping issues. She thinks she is so smart. But she is wrong about port congestion. If we allow anyone to drive commercial trucks there will be no backup of containers moving inland. Gracie, a tip for public speaking, Never turn your back to the audience. We had "Demo Days" at work again this past week. I was busy on most of the days, but I went up to the demo site after the event was over on Friday and took a look at machines we have on site.

My friend Pete called yesterday from I 81 near Scranton. He was twisting up the differential on his pickup while trailering his camper. The differential was making a lot of noise and he had just got some work done to it. Luckily, the camper and truck made it to whitney point. I agreed to pull the trailer with my truck to Rochester for him to lighten the load on his truck. It was a large camper, about 28 feet and 8000 lbs. My truck felt it was pulling something that's for sure. It was a different experience. We got home after midnight.

As part of my recent Maine trip we decided to explore a little out on Vinalhaven (Vinyl Haven) Island. There is a ferry that runs out there. I was pleasantly surprised that it isn't totally about tourism out there. I daydreamed about buying a waterfront property and doing fishing and lobstering. The properties I found were somewhat affordable and essentially turn-key fishing bases. I also had to stop and take a couple fan-boy pics of some antique rolling stock. They must get snow up in Maine. I didn't see any in September.

Dowdell's 2023 Balkan trip Wow! What a trip! 10 New Countries (based on what the US state dept considers countries) Romania Bulgaria Moldova Serbia Bosnia and Herzegovina Kosovo North Macedonia Montenegro Albania Greece 3 Different Alphabets (many different languages, sometimes with multiple alphabets) 10 Currencies 14 Taxi or Uber Rides 3 Rental Cars 15 Border Crossings 9 Flight Segments 4 Bus Trips All that in 14 days. I am only now convinced that we could complete a trip with those stats, because it is over. It was a complex trip. We tried to take a version of this trip in 2020 but were thwarted by Covid. This time we pulled it off. The Balkan peninsula countries are fascinating because of the deep history, unique cultures, but also with current events and intercountry relationships. Back on the Farm Again.

I was up on the farm finalizing some new tenants and a new building. I specifically made some time to hike the forest. I definitely have a real regret of not doing exactly that more often. Woods are magical. There is such order in the absolute randomness of nature. I also managed to get some nice sunrise pics from 17,000 Feet. One is over Susquehanna, PA. The other as we are about to cross the Hudson River.

Cranberry Mead I am making mead today. It has a little cranberry in it, not much. I suspect it will be quite subtle in the finished product. The coffee can contraption holds the honey pot (jug) so the honey can all run out in just a matter of mere hours without having to baby sit. The recipe is as follows: Water Yeast, Lalvin EC-1118 Saccharomyces bayanus (Champagne) 15 grams (rehydrated) 2 quarts Cranberry juice from concentrate 10 pounds of Raspberry Honey from Howland Honey The starting gravity turned out to be 1073. The liquid that mead is made from is called "must". The temperature is above zero out there for the first time in a couple of days. I think it is 3 above right now. The llamas seem happy, the chickens are happy anytime I give them sheep food. We got 4 eggs this morning so everyone is still producing. NYS DEC Hunting and Outdoor Safety What a wild weekend so far. The pigs are gone. I buried the entrails. Bonnie spent quite a bit of time hosing things down and cleaning up the barn. My hunting safety course is over. The lessons and lectures included, simulated hunting in the woods for turkeys and deer (very effective), target shooting, survival training, hunter [sportsman] ethics (desperately needed), Game care [field dressing, etc] and of course gun safety. One of our instructors was stuck by a deer slug in his neck in 2002. He is very lucky to be alive. He did all the right things. He was still shot. I feel a little different. This is the first time we have raised an animal for food. And coincidentally; at the same time, we are changing professor's (Mr. alpha llama) dressings for the surgery's deep wound on his foot. It is all meat, Human, Llama, Pig, Hunter.
